Cicada Press is a leading Australian custom printmaking workshop founded by artist, master printer and curator Michael Kempson in 2001. Established initially at Meadowbank TAFE, Cicada Press relocated to UNSW Art & Design in 2004, where it operated until 2021, before becoming an independent studio based in Northern Sydney.

Grounded in collaboration, experimentation and education, Cicada Press brings artists and skilled printmakers together to create original works while extending the possibilities of contemporary printmaking. Since its establishment, the workshop has collaborated with more than 270 artists and produced over 1,600 editions, connecting artists from metropolitan, regional and remote Australia with practitioners from across the world.

Cicada Press has developed particularly significant relationships with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander artists and communities. Its Indigenous printmaking workshops have provided opportunities for established and emerging artists to experiment with printmaking, exchange knowledge and develop new bodies of work within a collaborative studio environment.

Artists associated with Cicada Press include Tony Albert, Fiona Foley, Judy Watson, Reko Rennie, Vernon Ah Kee, Brenda L Croft, D Harding, John Olsen, Elisabeth Cummings, Fiona Hall, Ben Quilty and Reg Mombassa. Through this extensive network, Cicada Press has made an important contribution to contemporary Australian printmaking and its national and international reach.
